Dear Coach,
While I was writing this manual I often worried that coaches would take some of the ideas found inside back to their teams with the thought that, "All I have to do now is put my team through these 'drills' and we are sure to win!" Nothing can be further from the truth. It takes years to become a good coach. In fact, one of the characteristics found in good coaches is that they often think that they could be doing a better job. Good coaches are forever "fiddling" with their craft. They realize that there are no magic drills or formulas. In fact, what works like a charm one day, is often a flop the next.
The only way to become a better coach is to actually coach, play, and spend as much time with the game and its players as possible. Good coaches are constantly thinking of ways in which they can improve, or thinking and scheming about the game and their team. To them, coaching is somewhat of a sacred activity because they are aware that often lives are at stake. We have all seen and heard about players whose lives have been changed because of the positive impact of a great coach. We can not afford to be anything but our best!!!
I hope that the activities or words of this manual somehow inspire you to keep coaching better. If there is only one idea that you can take and use from this manual, and improve by it, I will be happy.
